Sound familiar?
Working with client’s everyday, I know the expectations that get placed on our foundation every morning. All formulae; liquid, cream, stick, compact or powder; feel the same pressure. Foundation is an incredible product for our skin and make up look, but it can only do so much.
Bring on the analogy: Makeup Foundation is very similar to the Foundation of a building. Makeup Foundation is applied to the face to create an even, uniform colour to the complexion to cover flaws, a base for eye, lip and cheek colour. The definition of a Foundation is something that supports something else. The lowest load bearing part of a building. If we run with this analogy, foundation application, and the importance of spending time and doing this right, will give us far greater make up results. And the knowledge, that it alone, cannot complete a make up look. Could you imagine going to paint a wall in your home with a pot of paint and your hands alone? Think of the finished result…
So how can we make our Make Up Foundation work? Giving us the coverage, finish and longevity we crave for?
TOOLS are what we need to aid us accomplishing a task
Dependent on the coverage you want, you need to choose your tools accordingly.
Hands – give a sheer, lightweight coverage. The warmth of your fingers and hands gently dilute your make up and blend it across the skin.
Makeup Brushes – control the amount of product you use. Coverage can be buffed out and blended or built up where needed. The different style brushes give different finishes:
- Flat Style Foundation Brush (smooth and soft)
- Stipple Style Foundation Brush (light and airbrushed)
- Buffing Style Foundation Brush (seamless and blended)
- Touch up and Concealer Brushes are great for precision on under eyes and/or over blemishes.
Makeup Sponges give a sheer to full coverage, dependent if you use it damp or dry respectively. Round sponges, wedge sponges or Beauty Blenders can press, buff and blend foundation into the skin.
SUPPORT NETWORKS are necessary both under and over your make up for your foundation coverage, finish and longevity needs
Skincare is the basis to great make up. Using skincare that is for your skin type and concern is essential. Daily cleaning with a cleanser for your skin type will reap results in the hydration levels in your skin, while the method of massaging the product in and removing with a face cloth will improve the circulation and skin tone over time.
Primer is a preparation coat that prevents absorption of subsequent layers of make up. It smoothes the texture , can reduce the look of pores and lines and improves the feel, appearance and consistency of the surface of the skin. It can pretty much act like double sided sticky tape, to hold on your makeup evenly.
Concealer focuses on giving extra coverage to the skin where needed. Under the eyes and blemishes can get a brighter and more even tone finish instead of packing on more foundation.
Powder absorbs shine and sets. Applying it to areas of excessive shine balances the skin, by taking away the greasy finish but keeping a fresh healthy glow. This controls the skin type and gives you the finish you require. A brush or a sponge can be used to apply. Mineral based powders can also add extra cover where desired.
So before you purchase another foundation that promises to give you the look you desire, try these tips with the current foundation you’re using and see how you fare. Try not to place all the pressure on the foundation alone. Our poor foundation always feels like it fails us but it’s purpose and function can really just be misunderstood.
