How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

This is one of the best things you can do for both your makeup bag and your skin.

Makeup brushes are one of the greatest tools for your makeup application.  They give you the smoothest finish and you get much better longevity when wearing it.  If you makeup brushes are not cared for and cleaned frequently, they can become more of a hindrance.  When makeup builds up in your makeup brushes, bacteria will grow, and with each application, you will be putting this onto your face.  The more product that builds up in your makeup brushes over time, the harder they are to use and to blend your makeup too.

There are numerous ways to keep your makeup brushes hygienic.  The most important one is washing them, and undergoing a thorough deep clean.

Caring for your makeup brushes will maintain the quality of your brushes for as long as possible. It stops bacteria building up and spreading, therefore preventing unnecessary breakouts and skin issues. It aids better application and blending of your makeup.

Cleaning your makeup brushes is never fun to do (believe me, it’s a daily task for me as a Makeup Artist) but you will love the feeling of applying your makeup with fresh brushes and the finish will be so much cleaner.

The most important brushes to clean regularly (weekly), would be brushes you use with cream based products (foundation and concealer) and also the brushes you use closest to the lash line.  But all brushes need to be cleaned.

Deep Cleaning Brushes – Step by Step

Wet your brush, with the bristles facing down and away from the water tap.  You do not want water making its way into the metal barrel at the base of the bristles.

Add a small amount of brush cleaner into your palm.

Buff your brush in the palm of your hand to work up a light lather.

Rinse and squeeze out excess water.

Repeat if necessary (like double shampooing the hair on your head).

Leave to dry with the brush head coming over the side of a counter.  This allows them to dry more easily and no stagnant water remains under the brush hairs.

Daily Brush Cleaning and Maintenance – How To

Use a Brush Cleaning Spray or liquid. Spray onto a tissue or pour a small amount in a container and dip.  Then buff your brush over the tissue to remove superficial product and you can leave air dry.

Makeup Brush Storage

Keep your brushes in a separate case or holder from your makeup.  This keeps them cleaner. Away from drops of liquid, loose powders and also pencil sharpening crumbs.
