04 Apr Essential Bridal Skincare Routine: Get Glowing Skin for Your Wedding Day
Why Skincare Matters for Brides
As your makeup artist on your wedding day, I want to ensure you look and feel radiant. An even complexion is the perfect canvas for beautiful makeup, and your skincare routine plays a key role in achieving that. Skincare truly is the basis for great makeup—well-hydrated, smooth skin allows makeup to apply effortlessly, wear longer, and look more polished. It also makes colours appear brighter and fresher, and makes blending so much easier.
The right skincare routine prepares your skin for makeup, ensuring that you will have that gorgeous bridal glow throughout the day. I can guide you through the steps of an essential and basic skincare routine designed to keep your skin looking healthy, hydrated, and prepped for the big day. This routine can be carried on after the wedding day too. It is so beneficial to your whole bridal party, including your other half too, so do share with them.
Essential Bridal Skincare
Here is the essential skincare routine I recommend for every bride. These simple steps will enhance your makeup look on your wedding day. Before you look into treatments and become overwhelmed with additional skin boosts ahead of your wedding day, let these steps be your non negotiables first!
Warm Up Your Skincare
Before applying your skincare products, warm them between your hands. This helps them move, blend and absorb better and ensures an even, smooth application. When applying, don’t forget to cover often-overlooked areas like between your brows, around the nose, the outer eye area, and up your neck.
So here it is…
This is the simple and maintainable routine I recommend for every bride leading up to the big day to ensure flawless skin and longer wearing makeup.
1. Double Cleansing: Start With a Clean Slate
Double cleansing is essential for everyone. It is the biggest skincare step where I see the greatest difference in my clients skin. It ensures your skin is free from makeup, pollutants, and your skin is treated, providing the perfect base for skincare routine and your makeup.
First Cleanse: Start with an oil or balm-based cleanser. These are fantastic for removing makeup—including stubborn eye makeup—and environmental pollutants. Apply the cleanser to dry skin, massaging gently to break down makeup and impurities. Add water to emulsify the cleanser, turning it milky, and rinse thoroughly. You can use a face cloth here for gentle exfoliation and to remove residue.
Second Cleanse: The second cleanse is all about treating your skin. Use a hydrating, gentle cleanser suited to your skin type; milk, cream, gel, foam. This will boost your skin, while keeping your skin soft and hydrated, ready for the next steps.
The process of massaging your cleansers into your skin not only breaks down and removes makeup, but it improves your skins circulation, colour and tone over time too.
If your skin feels tight after cleansing, it is a sign it hasn’t been properly hydrated and your product choices may be too stripping. Tight skin in turn produces more oil, which can affect how makeup adheres and lasts. Hydrated skin allows makeup to last longer and stay looking fresh throughout the day.
Bonus Tip: If you prefer a separate eye makeup remover, apply it to a cotton pad and hold it over your eyes for 30 seconds. Gently wipe downwards over the lashes to remove makeup without irritation. Avoid rubbing and scrubbing.
2. Hydrate & Protect: The Key to a Glowing Complexion
Now that your skin is clean, it is time to hydrate and protect. Hydrated skin provides the perfect base for makeup, ensuring your foundation goes on smoothly and lasts all day. And SPF is the single best anti-aging product you can use to protect your skin.
- Moisturiser: Choose a moisturiser that is tailored to your skin type and offers long-lasting hydration; lightweight gel, soft lotion or rich cream. Apply it all over your face, neck, and décolletage to ensure your skin is soft, nourished, and ready for makeup.
- SPF 30-50 – this can be included in your moisturiser or you can apply it separately after.
- Face Mists: Face mists are fantastic for hydration and priming the skin. They can be sprayed directly onto your face, both at the skincare stage and over makeup.
- Your Eyes & Lips need extra care. Use a nourishing serum or under-eye cream to hydrate and smooth the delicate skin around your eyes, particularly focusing on the outer corner where expression lines start. This will help prevent makeup from creasing. For your lips, a hydrating lip balm or treatment will keep them soft and smooth, ensuring that foundation or concealer doesn’t cling.
3. Extend Your Skincare onto the Neck, Chest & Body
Don’t forget your neck, chest and body, especially if they are exposed in your wedding dress—these areas show up in photos and are often overlooked in skincare routines. Apply your skincare products to these areas to ensure a smooth, hydrated look from top to toe. And in turn, additional glow and concealing can be easily applied to enhance and link your look on your wedding morning.
Additional Skincare Tips for a Long-Lasting Bridal Look
- Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin hydrated and glowing. This will support your skin’s appearance and makeup’s longevity.
- Sleep Well: Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night. Your skin repairs itself while you sleep, and proper rest will ensure you wake up looking refreshed and ready for your big day.
A Great Skincare Routine is the Foundation for Beautiful, Long-lasting Makeup
By following these simple steps, you will help create a smooth canvas for makeup that will apply well and will last all day.
While this routine is effective for most brides, if you have specific skin concerns, I highly recommend consulting a skincare professional, dermatologist, or GP to address your skin’s unique needs.
I do also plan to share additional salon skin treatments through my blog, that could complement your home routine and take your skincare to the next level in preparation for your wedding day. But your skincare needs to start, and continue at home!
Start early, take care of your skin, and enjoy the journey to your big day.
